DARNY privacy policy

Last updated 26 October 2026

DARNY is a food scanner for Belgium. It has no accounts, no advertising, no tracking and no analytics, and it never sells or shares data.

Who is responsible

DARNY is responsible for the data described here. Questions, requests and complaints: privacy@darny.app.

What stays on your phone

Your preferences (allergies, halal settings, diet, goals), your scan history, your saved products, a copy of the products you looked at recently (so they open without a connection), your language and the date you first opened DARNY are stored only on your phone. They are never sent to DARNY.

Delete them at any time in Profile, “Delete all data on this phone”, or by deleting the app.

What is sent, and why

Looking up a product. When you scan or type a barcode, the app sends only that barcode to DARNY’s server; when you search, it sends the words you type. Neither is linked to you: there is no account and no device or advertising identifier. The server counts how often each barcode is looked up, to decide which product data to check first.

Reporting a problem. The app sends the barcode, the kind of problem, the text you write and whether the result was definite. Please don’t write personal details in it. Reports are used only to correct product data.

Sending photos of a pack. Only the photos you take on the photo screen are sent, when you tap Send, with the barcode and any note you write. Location and device details are removed when they arrive. They are seen only by DARNY’s reviewers, used only to add or correct that product, and never shared or published. Please don’t photograph people.

Technical logs. Like any website, DARNY’s server records requests, including the IP address, for security and to stop abuse. These logs are rotated and overwritten, and are not used for anything else.

Camera

The camera reads barcodes on the phone itself: nothing is recorded or uploaded while scanning. It takes a photo only on the photo screen, when you choose to send DARNY photos of a product, and nothing leaves the phone until you tap Send.

Where the data is

DARNY’s server is hosted by OVHcloud in the European Union. No one else receives what the app sends: there are no third-party analytics, advertising or tracking services in the app.

Product information and photos come from Open Food Facts. DARNY’s server downloads them itself, so your phone never contacts Open Food Facts and Open Food Facts receives nothing about you.

How long

Your phone keeps your data until you delete it. On the server, reports and photos are kept for as long as they are needed to check and correct the product. Technical logs are overwritten within weeks.

Legal basis

Looking up products, reports and photos are processed because you ask for them (to provide the service, GDPR art. 6(1)(b)), and technical logs for DARNY’s legitimate interest in keeping the service secure (art. 6(1)(f)).

Your rights

Because DARNY links nothing it receives to you, it usually has nothing it can find under your name; everything personal is on your phone, under your control. If you sent a report or photos and want them deleted, write to the address above with the barcode and roughly when you sent them, and they will be removed.

You have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction and objection under the GDPR, and the right to complain to the Belgian Data Protection Authority.

Children

DARNY is not directed at children under 13 and collects nothing that identifies anyone.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version is published here with a new date.
